The Spanish government is going down the route a bit that President Biden and Democrats went down. It is subsidizing the manufacturing of various renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, to the tune of €355 million.

“The new call for funding proposals is inviting equipment makers from the following categories to participate: solar, onshore wind and marine renewables, batteries and energy storage solutions, heat pumps and geothermal energy, hydrogen (including electrolysers and fuel cells), sustainable biogas and biomethane, power grids, hydropower turbines, other renewables (including osmotic energy, biomass, landfill gas or sewage gas treatment), energy efficiency, and equipment and machines for industrial decarbonisation (electric arc furnaces, hydrogen-ready direct reduction of iron, industrial boilers). The aid may cover the establishment of new factories, capacity expansions and conversion of existing production lines to manufacture the components,” Renewables Now reports.

Funding is provided via the RENOVAL 2 program, which is managed by the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). “The scheme is funded through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery funds under Spain’s recovery and resilience plan.”

Submissions are being accepted from January 22 to February 25.

Spain already has a strong manufacturing base. It manufactures almost all of the components of a wind farm, as well as the majority of solar PV installations.
