General Motors fared well amid challenging economic conditions, achieving higher profits despite flat sales in the US and decline in China. By Will Girling

Although General Motors’ Q1 result was primarily lifted by a one-off tariff refund, there were still signs the company was moving in the right direction after its expensive electric vehicle (EV) asset write-downs at the end of 2025. Its second quarter performance added reassurances to that optimism, although sales and reported operating income continue to trend negative.
