There’s a new update to Hexcode’s GS-911 that will allow users to access newer BMW motorcycles like the F 450 GS, R 1300 GS, GS Adventure and RT, R 12, R 12 G/S and nineT, F 900 GS and S 1000 RR.
In addition to being compatible with these bikes, the new update also protects engine damage by preventing the user from updating engine coding or configurations while the engine is running. Hexcode has also streamlined the process through which you can save your original controller settings in case something goes awry with your modifications. Finally, they’ve improved measurement and validation checks for the XCCP, or Body Domain Controller; it affects DSA ride height and windscreen calibration.
The best way to get information about updates to the GS-911 is to subscribe to Hexcode’s newsletter, which you can do on their website at https://www.hexgs911.com/—just start scrolling down the page and a pop-up will appear that allows you to subscribe. You can also view the online archive at https://www.hexgs911.com/news/.
What follows is a brief tutorial for Apple Mac users on how to navigate the update process. It typically requires two steps: 1) Updating the app on your computer, and 2) Updating the firmware on your GS-911 device. To update the firmware, you may need to use a USB cable to plug your device directly into your computer. Some GS-911 devices are equipped with USB-B ports similar to a printer or scanner.
Updating the GS-911 on a Mac (your computer may be different, but the basics are the same)
Connect your GS-911 to the computer via an appropriate USB cable. Then open your GS-911 Utility app. Click “Check for Updates.” You’ll be prompted to download a package file (.pkg) to update the GS-911 Utility app. Don’t click “OK” – click “Update to version XXXX now.”

Once the .pkg has downloaded, close your Utility app. Then double-click the .pkg file to run the update.

Follow the instructions in the updater.

Once the Utility app update has completed, open the app again and click on “Check for Updates” again. Click on “Install the update now” to update your GS-911 device.

Its lights will blink at times and it may even beep—don’t unplug it from your computer during the update process.

There may be multiple steps to the update process, so let them proceed without interruption.

Once the update is completed, you’ll get a pop-up message to that effect. Click on “OK.” You’re all done! Unplug your GS-911 device from the computer.
