We go once more into the breach at Parmigiani Fleurier, this time as part of a guided tour with other Asian press. Our last story on this most amazing of watchmaking nodes – the brand itself is just one part of the set-up – covered all the basics of all the constituent parts of what is known as the Parmigiani Watchmaking Centre.

For this run, we are once more not visiting Atokalpa and Elwin, unfortunately, and we acknowledge that these remain significant gaps in our otherwise extensive coverage. Nevertheless, we did get an in-depth rundown on what happens at the aforementioned sites and dutifully sum it up here.

Of course, if you are already relatively familiar with Parmigiani Fleurier, or have read our story from three years ago (it lives on online), nothing has changed at all. We have made an effort to spruce things up with commentary on each of the production sites, based on what might make them valuable…

On that note, the biggest update at Parmigiani Fleurier in the last few years is the news that the entire Parmigiani Watchmaking Centre (PWC), including the brand Parmigiani Fleurier, was and might still be in search of a new owner.

Currently, the whole show is still under the stewardship of the Sandoz Family Foundation. This news (still) offers us another angle to present the information about PWC in a different light, and that is just what we have done.

We begin therefore with the very short list of what Parmigiani Fleurier, which we might use interchangeably with PWC, cannot do. It is really just five items… Parmigiani Fleurier does not make sapphire crystals, synthetic rubies, leather straps, bracelets and mainsprings.

Given that the brand is going great guns with sales of the Tonda PF, which Bloomberg says accounted for an incredible 98 percent of the brand’s sales in 2023, we imagine that plans must be afoot to add bracelet production to the capabilities of Les Artisans Boitiers, or else make a strategic acquisition. The short of it is that there is nothing to report, yet, and nothing rises above the level of rank speculation.

A Foundation In Restoration

The story of Parmigiani Fleurier is inextricably linked to its founder, Michel Parmigiani. In the heart of the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s, when the Swiss watch industry was wobbling precariously, Michel (whom we address by his first name for clarity) established a workshop dedicated to the near-lost art of restoring antique timepieces.

His extraordinary talent for breathing life back into historical marvels earned him an elite clientele, including the Patek Philippe Museum and, crucially, the Sandoz Family Foundation. To wit, Parmigiani Fleurier CEO Guido Terreni often says Michel has a black belt in watchmaking, thanks to his prowess in restoration.

The foundation, built on the fortune of the Novartis pharmaceutical company, entrusted Michel with maintaining its vast and priceless collection of historical clocks and automata.

This relationship blossomed, and with the foundation’s backing, the Parmigiani Fleurier brand was officially launched in 1996. Its first creation, the Toric QP Rétrograde, immediately established the brand’s identity with its distinctive knurled bezel inspired by classical architecture and its complex, beautifully finished movement.

For Michel himself, restoration is a way to return life to mechanical wonders, without altering the character of the original. This deep understanding of historical mechanics and distinct absence of egotism became the brand’s unshakable foundation.

To realize this vision of uncompromising quality, Michel and the foundation embarked on an ambitious project: building a vertically integrated industrial hub around Parmigiani Fleurier. This Parmigiani Watchmaking Centre is a constellation of specialist companies, each a master in its own right, giving the brand a level of self- sufficiency that few can claim.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier (VMF): The heart of the operation, VMF develops and produces high-end movements for Parmigiani Fleurier. It also supplies a select list of prestigious clients, including Hermès (which owns a 25% stake) and Richard Mille. It is the brand’s central nervous system, handling everything from R&D to final movement assembly and finishing. TAG Heuer’s Movement Strategy Director Carole Forestier-Kasapi calls Vaucher one of the best in the trade; VMF works with TAG Heuer to produce the brand’s split-seconds chronograph movement.

Atokalpa & Elwin: These firms produce the virtually microscopic, high-precision components that are the building blocks of a movement. Atokalpa is a specialist in the regulating organ—the escapement, balance wheel, and even the hairspring—a capability possessed by only a handful of manufactures worldwide. Elwin excels in bar turning, creating a vast array of tiny screws, pinions, and spindles with micron-level precision.

Quadrance & Habillage: This is the dial-making expert. From intricate hand-turned guillochage to the delicate grained finish of the Tonda PF dials—achieved by manually rubbing silver powder onto a brass plate—this is where the face of the watch is given its soul.

Les Artisans Boitiers (LAB): The casemaker, LAB masters both modern CNC machining and traditional hand-craftsmanship. It is responsible for the elegant, ergonomic cases of the Tonda PF as well as extraordinary one-off creations like the white gold double hunter case of the La Rose Carrée pocket watch. The Bizarre BMW Diesel Experiment That Put Ford Thunderbirds in Munich


The idea sounds absurd: diesel-powered Ford Thunderbirds roaming the streets of Munich under BMW supervision. But at a certain point in the 1970s, that unlikely premise apparently became reality. Even more unlikely, the responsible party is none other than BMW Motorsport — perhaps the last organization you would relate to diesel power. Depending on how you look at it, the series of unlikely pairings had all the eccentricities of greatness or markings of a flop. But either way, it’s an origin story explaining how a BMW diesel engine found its way into an American luxury coupe.

An American in Munich

You might not know the name Burkhard Goeschal. But he’s at least part of the reason for a fleet of Ford Thunderbirds descending on Munich sometime in the 1970s. According to him, Ford contracted BMW Motorsport to “test and validate Steyr-sourced diesel engines.” Logically, this meant BMW Motorsport needed to install diesel engines in vehicles with Ford badges. Apparently, Motorsport was in no condition financially to turn away the request — albeit seemingly very far from what the Motorsport division is best at. The agreement led to a flock of Ford Thunderbirds cropping up in Munich as test cars.

But it probably wasn’t the wild and winged 1950s and 1960s era Thunderbirds cruising through the streets of Munich. Remember that Goeschal didn’t start at BMW until January 1978. That places the Ford Thunderbird at least in its seventh generation. Unlike the cars preceding it, the seventh-gen Thunderbird was smaller and prioritized fuel efficiency. Of course, these characteristics were total byproducts of the ongoing oil crisis. However, the test cars were almost certainly early or even pre-production ninth generation models, for a very good, ostensibly unrelated reason: the Lincoln Mark VII.

The Thunderbird Diesel: Where It Ended Up

The Lincoln Mark VII debuted as the Lincoln Continental Mark VII in 1983. The Mark VII came with only two engine choices: a 5.0-liter V8 making up to 225 horsepower and a BMW M21 diesel engine. Underpinning the Mark VII was the same Ford Fox platform behind the contemporary Mustang, Mercury Cougar, and yes — the ninth-gen Ford Thunderbird. While the Ford Thunderbird never got a diesel engine, roughly 2,300 Lincoln Mark VIIs shipped with the diesel. With BMW power and a ZF-sourced automatic — rather than the four-speed Ford trans backing the 5.0-liter — it’s almost certain the Thunderbirds in Munich later became the Lincoln Mark VII.

Furthermore, describing the M21 as a “Steyr diesel” also makes sense. In the 1970s, BMW set out to develop an engine that combined strong performance with improved fuel economy. As you might have guessed, another direct response to the oil crisis. Development formally began in 1975, with team of BMW engineers using the M20 gasoline engine as a foundation. By the time the engine reached production, its designation had been finalized as the M21. From the outset, BMW intended the Steyr engine plant to be the exclusive production facility for the new diesel. The plant was established as a joint venture with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1978, before BMW assumed full control in February 1982. Early production at Steyr initially focused on six-cylinder gasoline engines, with diesel manufacturing ramping up soon after.

The BMW-Ford Diesel Loop Closes

In 1983, Ford announced plans to purchase as many as 190,000 BMW turbodiesel engines over several years. However, the rapid collapse of the American diesel market in the early 1980s curtailed those ambitions. The Lincoln Mark VII is the only thing to show for it 40 years later. 2026 Ford Mustang Boss or Cobra might debut at Detroit Auto Show


Ford is likely to debut two new Ford Racing models at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. While the exact details are unclear, sources suggest that at least one of the cars might be a Mustang Cobra or Boss.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has already confirmed that the Mustang isn’t going anywhere and that the future of the pony car is secure. The company continues to invest in the iconic American muscle car, and we might even see a new model at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.

“Actually, we’re doing really well with Mustang. I think we’re the only one left really, which we’re quite proud of. We’re investing a lot in Mustang. I think the thing people don’t get about Mustang is that it’s a global car. It’s the best-selling sports coupe in the world,” Farley said.

The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 was powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine tuned to produce 444 hp. It was paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The special edition also got upgraded suspension and beefier Brembo brakes, among other upgrades.

Ford revealed the Mustang RTR in October last year. It is touted as the most exciting non-V8 Mustang ever.

Red Bull has revealed its first hypercar, the RB17, in its updated production form.

It’s been less than a year since the first images of the pre-production Red Bull RB17 leaked online. However, it’s only now that the first official images of the RB17 v2.0 have been revealed to the public.

The RB17 has undergone a few changes since the first concept was unveiled in 2024. The latest iteration of the hypercar features L-shaped LED headlamps, a Formula 1-style sidepod with deep undercuts, and a rear end that reminds us of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR. The production version is also likely to get a massive shark fin extending from the roof scoop.

Adrian Newey has been refining the design over the past few months. One of the recent changes he made was to the exhaust, which has now been moved onto the spine of the engine cover.

The Red Bull RB17 is powered by a Cosworth-built 4.5-liter V10 engine that revs to 15,000 rpm and delivers 986 hp. Additionally, a 197 hp electric motor takes over at low speeds and assists the engine with torque-fill.

New year, new you. And most importantly, new travel opportunities! If you’re looking to prioritize (or re-prioritize) travel in 2026, you’ve come to the right place. Although travel can be resource-intensive, requiring time and money, it can also be easier than you think to make a PTO day here or there into a long weekend. That’s especially true with a pre-planned calendar of potential 2026 long weekend vacations — and with a rental RV that allows you to travel in comfort and style, without having to wait in long airport security lines or bounce from hotel to hotel. 

In fact, 2026 features seven “natural” long weekends (no paid time off required), and with just six or eight days off, you could easily expand that to ten or more short vacations (or one longer one). What Is PTO Hacking?

PTO hacking is pretty much what it sounds like: using the minimum amount of PTO (paid time off) to achieve the maximum vacation opportunity. Often, this means planning PTO around holidays you already have off from work in order to make long weekends even longer.

This tactic works especially well for RV trips since many people are looking to visit drivable locations that aren’t too far from home, and which are suitable for a three- or four-day weekend. And since in an RV, even the journey is part of the fun, you won’t have to waste even a single second of your paid time off navigating a busy airport or schlepping your suitcases into and out of a hotel. (That’s not to mention the fact that you won’t be limited by flight schedules, delays, and other out-of-your-control aspects of air travel.)

The Basic PTO Rule

The basic rule of PTO hacking is simple. Use the fewest PTO days possible — and get the maximum amount of time off. Some simple ways to achieve this include:

  • Taking PTO on Fridays or Mondays to extend a normal, two-day weekend
  • Stacking PTO around federal holidays to create longer long weekends (our favorite approach) 
  • Combining your PTO with flexible remote work, if your company allows it, to create longer working vacations that combine downtime with productivity

Below, we’ll show you some specific 2026 long weekends that lend themselves easily to PTO hacking.

Why RV Trips Are Perfect for Long Weekends

You won’t be surprised to learn that we think RVing is the best way to go no matter what. But our favorite style of travel really does combine well with a PTO-hacking approach. That’s because:

  • You aren’t limited by flight schedules, which can eat into limited vacation time
  • Similarly, you choose the departure time, which maximizes your adventures (by leaving on Thursday night or early on Friday, for example)
  • It’s pet-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged family members wherever you go
  • It works well for remote workers, who are often most eager to stack PTO days and take advantage of travel opportunities
  • Plus, it’s just plain fun to see the U.S. by road

Good news, PTO hackers. There are eight federally-recognized holidays that naturally lend themselves to long weekends in 2026, most of which won’t require you to take even a single day of PTO. (In the table below, you’ll also see that we include Independence Day, which this year falls on a Saturday — but that July weekend is fun enough that we figure it might be worth a day off or two anyway!)

Now that you’ve got a baseline for which holidays are available for turning into adventures, let’s take a closer look at how to hack your PTO to get the highest number of days off (and the most vacation time bang for your buck) with some specific examples.

While not exhaustive, here are some of our top-hit options for turning a few PTO days into a longer vacation in 2026.

1 PTO Day → 4-Day Weekend

The very first opportunity for this one is coming right up — take off the Friday after New Year’s Day and you’ll have a four-day weekend running from Thursday, January 1 to Sunday, January 4, 2026.

When it comes to learning how to turn one PTO day into a long weekend, other good opportunities include any Friday or Monday holiday. Just take the other day (Friday or Monday) off to turn a three-day weekend into a four-day one. Examples include taking Friday off before Memorial Day or taking Monday off after Juneteenth.

2 PTO Days → 5-Day Weekend

Looking for an even longer long weekend? Here are some easy opportunities to turn two PTO days into five full days off.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Take off Thursday and Friday for a five-day vacation from Thursday, January 15 through Monday, January 19 (the actual holiday)
  • President’s Day: Take off Thursday and Friday for a five-day vacation from Thursday, February 12 through Monday, February 16 (the actual holiday)
  • Memorial Day and Labor Day can be hacked using the same formula: take off the Thursday and Friday before a Monday holiday for a five-day weekend (or the Tuesday and Wednesday after, if you’d rather come home to a much shorter work week)
  • For Juneteenth, which falls on a Friday you can reverse this tactic and take off Monday and Tuesday to turn a three-day weekend into a five-day vacation

4 PTO Days → 9-Day RV Trip

Looking for a serious upgrade? Here are some opportunities to use four PTO days to get more than a full week off.

  • Its EV tax break only includes cheaper models in 2026, and it could change what cars people buy this year.
  • Tesla was still the market share leader with 19.1% for a fifth consecutive year, although Chinese carmakers are also gaining ground.

Norway is well ahead of the rest of the world in its transition to electric vehicles—it’s almost complete. EVs accounted for just under 30% of all new cars bought in the country a decade ago, and in 2025, it almost achieved its goal of not adding any new gas cars to its roads.

Although Norway isn’t in the European Union, it has very close ties to the bloc, and in many ways it functions as a de facto member. Even though many EU countries pushed back against the Union’s plan to end sales of pure combustion by 2035 (and eventually got the ban postponed), Norway kept chasing this goal and achieved it almost a decade before the rest of Europe was supposed to.

The country published its car sales numbers for 2025, and they show pure electric vehicles made up 95.9% of the total. Just like the rest of Europe, Norway has been scaling back its EV incentives, but it didn’t seem to matter as most buyers still went electric last year. It used to offer VAT (value added tax) exemptions for all electric vehicles, but then it a price threshold which it’s been lowering periodically.

In 2026, only EVs costing under $30,000 still qualify for the exemption, which means most models on sale are no longer eligible. In 2025, Tesla was the country’s most popular car brand for the fifth consecutive year, with a 19.1% market share, followed by Volkswagen and Volvo. Chinese automakers increased their collective market share to 13.7%, up from 10.4% in 2024.

But it wasn’t just tax exemptions that spurred the popularity of EVs in Norway. It was also increasingly heavy taxes on combustion cars, which made them uneconomical to buy. The combination of high registration fees and high fuel taxes makes buying and running a gas car more expensive than going electric, so Norwegians are choosing the latter en masse.

Its EV adoption rate of nearly 100% in 2025 far exceeds the European Union’s average of 17%. Nordic countries lead Europe for EV adoption, with Denmark coming second after Norway, with over 50% of its new cars being electric, followed by Sweden with around 37%. Plug-in hybrids vary in popularity widely across Europe, but they accounted for 24.7% and 20.7% of all new car sales in Sweden and Finland, respectively, according to the European Environment Agency.

Norway almost achieved its 2017 goal of fully transitioning to electric vehicles by 2025. Most of the combustion vehicles purchased in the country last year were specialized for specific roles for which no equivalent EV was available. It will be interesting to see if Norway’s upward EV sales trend continues through 2026, even with the all-important VAT exemption only applying to cheaper EVs and not including the most popular electric models that people are actually buying.

Reuters suggests that the exemption, which applies only up to the current level, may boost sales of smaller, more affordable cars that buyers may not have previously considered. There is also an increasing number of good small electric cars from European manufacturers to choose from, as well as very keenly priced Chinese models that qualify for the exemption, so 2026 could mark a shift in the size of vehicles bought in Norway.

Time to get going on my goal of getting at least 5,000 miles on this bike in 2025!

Met up with my neighbor Steve at the Big Lots to and join him and some of his high school buddies on their traditional New Years Day ride. Steve has got to be in his 60s, and so are most of his friends. They’ve been doing this ride for over 30 years.

The host/ride leader lives in not far from me. It was a spirited ride through back rods, most of which were familiar. We ended up the really rural post office, crossed over the main US highway through town and stopped at the host’s home to socialize and enjoy a fantastic dinner of black-eyed peas (with big chunks of bacon, of course, because we’re not monsters) and corn bread.

Lens flare was accidental. Promise!

The bike handled great. The suspension is a little twitchy up front—unsure if that’s compression or rebound. At one point, the sweeper went around me; I found out later it’s because my new Metzeler RoadTec 01 tires are so sticky they kept kicking up rocks in his face. The bike is smooth but so obviously not a modern motorcycle. There’s no such thing as relying on one gear for everything from 25 to 55 MPH. Lots of shifting needed to stay in the power band—above 3,000 RPM is good, above 4,000 is better. My ankle got tired! I’m still hitting a false neutral between third and fourth gears; I’m trying to remember to load the shift lever and be FIRM with my upshifts.

(FOOTNOTE: Dale, also a fixture at Gridlock Motors and a bonafide Airhead and earlier expert, says loading the shifter—putting pressure on the lever in anticipation of squeezing the clutch lever just before shifting up—is a myth. He reminded me that I’m essentially riding a tractor, and shifting it requires significantly more effort than the snik-snik-snik shifting I’m used to with my 2015 GS.)

My right hand went numb for a while. I’m not sure if it was my riding position or vibration through the handlebar.

There were probably 20 bikes; it was a good turnout on a sunny day with highs in the low 40s Fahrenheit. Several MOA members were there, including a middle-aged couple who recognized me from my work. They had nice things to say, and that’s always a great way to spend any part of a day.

We’re looking at super cold days ahead with at least rain and probably sleet, ice and snow over the next two weeks. I’m really glad I got in a good, spirited ride today. It really was awesome.

The host for the NYD ride was doing some construction on his house and had a big pile of treated wood scraps like this one I grabbed to put under the foot of my side stand. I’ve carried it with me in the side case ever since!

One Year Later: I’ve made my own black-eyed peas batches multiple times since then, it was inspirational! Also, the host turned out to be a semi-retired appliance repairman, who I was able to engage to fix my clothes dryer when it stopped doing its job in the spring. OK, I’m lying about that … it stopped doing its job some time in mid-2024 and we worked around it by going to the coin-op and using the dryer at my parents’ house. Don’t judge.

Proton sells 157,976 units in 2025, 3.3% increase over 2024 – 6,000 exports highest in 13 years

After faltering slightly in 2024, Proton bounced back last year by selling 157,976 vehicles – an increase of 3.3% over the year before and putting it back on a trajectory of continuous improvement that started in 2018. This is estimated to have put its market share at 19.4%, a bump of 0.7% in a year where the total industry volume (TIV) is expected to have shrunk by 0.2% to 814,949 units.

A comprehensive renewal of Proton’s best-sellers enabled it to hit those highs. The company sold 74,013 units of the Saga (the highest since 2011), with 7,975 units of the new MC3 model – representing a 15.1% jump year-on-year – having been pushed out to owners last month alone. It also delivered 28,057 units of the X50, with a peak of 4,287 units in August (highest in 35 months) thanks to the introduction of the facelift.

Perhaps even more importantly, Proton has achieved its export goal of 6,000 units, helped by the setting up of a dedicated subsidiary called Proton International Corporation (PICSB). That’s its highest showing since 2012 and an increase of 26% over 2024, with its best month being December with 986 units. Egypt was its leading market with 2,280 units sold, while Vietnam also received 1,316 units of the Malaysian-made X50, badged as the Geely Coolray.

Sales and service network expansion was another area where Proton focused on, with the number of Proton Edar outlets now totalling 187 nationwide, including 27 new 3S and 4S centres and “sales city centres”. The company also boasts the largest dedicated EV network with 48 eMas dealerships nationwide, including 36 3S centres, 12 1S centres and 10 dedicated body and paint facilities.

This year is set to be another big one for Proton, with the continued rollout of its Intelligent Green Technology (i-GT) 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine in the X70, S70 and X90, to say nothing of the Saga’s Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) siblings on the horizon. Export numbers will also be boosted by the Saga being exported to key markets such as the Philippines, wearing the Geely badge.

This is not breaking news so much as a reminder of why tyre choice matters on a modern 911. The Pirelli P Zero R, developed specifically for Porsche and carrying the N marking, is the factory fit on the 911 Spirit 70 based on the GTS T-Hybrid. I spent time with the car on typical British roads and came away convinced the tyre suits the brief: fast road use with everyday usability.

Steering feel is the first tell. Around the straight-ahead the P Zero R responds cleanly, without the nervousness some ultra-high-performance tyres can bring on poor surfaces. Load it harder and lateral support builds progressively, which makes the hybrid GTS easy to place at speed.

Wet-weather confidence is a clear strength. On damp and fully wet tarmac the tyre maintains grip under throttle and trail-brake inputs, then communicates the approach of the limit with a small but useful smear of warning. That makes the 911 feel friendly rather than spiky on a cold morning run. Noise levels are well controlled at a cruise and the ride remains compliant enough for long distances, even on mixed urban surfaces and in the ragtop cabrio.

The P Zero R is not a track special, yet the operating window is wide enough that you can lean on it hard without it going greasy in a hurry. That being said, I’ve tired the P Zero R on track in heavyweights such as the M5 Touring and G80 M3, the performance was astonishing given the physics and forces at work. The Trofeo RS takes track performance to new heights and is N rated for speed freaks such as the 992 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Pirelli have developed a Trofeo RS compound for the upcoming McLaren W1 hypercar, complete with MCL marking.

The N rated marking matters. It denotes a Porsche-specific construction and compound that align with the GTS T-Hybrid’s suspension tune, stability systems and hybrid calibration. In practice, that integration is what gives the combination its easy, cohesive feel.

If you are considering a Spirit 70 or any 992.2 GTS T-Hybrid on factory rubber, the P Zero R remains a well-judged choice. It delivers grip, clarity and refinement that complement the car’s character, without stealing the spotlight.
